DETAILED INFO
Pump Start Pre Read
Your Responsibility
1. Choose a Pump, Infusion set and CGM system – see next section
2. Prescription - ensure your Diabetes Specialist or Nurse Prescriber has given/sent
you a prescription for a funded pump, consumables and compatible CGM system.
Request subsequent prescriptions from your GP.
3. Have a pre-pump start HbA1cs – A recent HbA1c levels prior to starting the pump so
your Healthcare Provider (HCP) can later compare it to your HbA1cs once you are on a
pump. If you haven’t had an HbA1c done in the last 3 months let your diabetes nurse know
as you will need a lab form for this test.
4. Retinal Screen - It is important to have a retinal screen of your eyes within 6 months
before your pump start. If you have any retinal problems your nurse will help you make
more gradual improvements to your diabetes control via your pump as sudden
improvements could potentially worsen existing retinal problems. Please let your nurse
know if you haven’t had a retinal screen in the last 6 months.
Carbohydrate Counting Course training – this was once a Pharmac requirement but now
with AID it is a HCP recommendation to have at least undertaken some form of training
and have an understanding of the basics. This will in time set you up for the best
outcome in pumping insulin when using an AIS system. We recommend seeing:
(diabetesonthenet.com):
www.bertiediabetes.com
www.knowdiabetes.org.uk
And load the smartphone App – Carbs & Cals (free version) to help you put this into
practice. Your Diabetes Nurse can help you with calculating your carbohydrate ratio (CHO)
and correction factor (CF).
5. Review the Youtube training videos - the Insulin Pump Company Territory Managers
send you before your training.
6. You will need to book a pre-pump appointment with your Diabetes Nurse - At this
appointment your starting pump basal rates will be worked out, your current insulin to carb
and correction ratios will be adjusted for use with the pump, and a plan for withdrawing
your long-acting insulin prior to your pump start will be discussed. To help work out your
starting basal and bolus rates your diabetes nurse will need to view blood glucose records
or sensor glucose – so please these to his appointment.
